2008 ends in adventure.....

This New Year celebration was something that can never be forgotten. It was an adventure of sorts. To be honest, it wasn’t exactly Indiana Jones…but hey, this will do for now.

A good friend had her birthday on the 31st and had invited me to join her for dinner. I was quite happy because, that would give me a chance to get out of the house. (I’ve been under blackmail house-arrest for the last two weeks). And since I would be meeting humans, I felt the need to get rid of my ‘home-less’ avatar and have a shave this time around. The beard had grown wild. (Almost Medusa like) I was to be at the restaurant at 8:30 PM according to the plan. And me being Johnny-on-the-spot when it comes to time, I was there…all clean shaven…well dressed and groomed at 8:30 PM. But no sign of the birthday girl!!! (Theme music with heavy bass…something like the ‘Terminator’ theme)

I thought it best to give her a call and see if she was delayed. The restaurant was teeming with people; maybe I ought to book a table. But that’s when all the adventure started (background score to show ‘revelation’… theme from ‘Apocalypse Now’). Conversation went something like this:

Me: Where are you guys?
She: Home !!!
Me: Uh…weren’t we to meet for dinner?
She: That’s tomorrow!!!
Me: No. That’s today. You said Wednesday evening at 8:30 PM. Here I am.
She: Oh my…I guess I got confused with the dates and days. We are meeting tomorrow. I thought 1st was a Wednesday……

( Back ground score to show shock and despair) (Rest of the conversation is immaterial)

Now, normally, I would get all super mad and scream, but I just found this whole predicament really hilarious. I just could not get myself to get mad. I told my other gang that I would not be joining them at TGIF, I told my folks I wont be coming for the movie, I told another friend that I wont be at their house party…all because I believed I was not going to spend new years at home. I even managed to get permission from the parental unit to let me out. So there I was…gift in hand, it’s quite cold and no concrete plans. What does our hero do next???? ( Background score to indicate breakthrough…’Back to the Future’ theme).

TGIF was not too far from where I was, but there was no way I was going to drive there. Reason being - the cops who’d find some way to extort money. ( Back ground score to indicate evil…something like when the orcs attack in LOTR). So what do I do? I can’t leave the bike here and I can’t drive it either. BOING !!!! After contemplating spending New Year’s eve at home by myself probably settling down to watch a Humphrey Bogart movie , I decided I’m going to TGIF….come what may. So I parked the bike at a friend’s place. He was having a party of his own. I got onto the main road in the hope of securing an auto rickshaw to get me to TGIF. ( Back ground score to indicate a great perilous journey….’Chronicles of Narnia’). But to no avail, none of those guys wanted to go, not even if I was ready to pay double the rate. And then out of the blue, came that blue beast (kind of going with the blue colour theme) the common man’s chariot…the good old…public service bus. And behold…it was going my way. So there our hero was…dressed fine…on a public bus getting sneers from the people around.

One would think that this ends here, but no! As I discovered later on, the bus stop was at least a kilometer away from TGIF. Another half hour to go for ‘Happy Hours’. What does our hero do? Perilous times call for drastic measures. ( Back ground score similar to The Dark Knight) Our hero does a quick calculation in his mind…his top running speed, the traffic, the weather, factors that may slow him down…..and he runs! (Back ground score similar to Chariots of Fire).

I made it!!! (Cheering…the crowd goes wild) I still have 20 minutes to spare. I do the whole Rocky ‘cheering on the top steps of the Philadelphia Museum’ thing. (Back ground theme from ‘Rocky’ )But the downside to all this running - I’m panting like a dog, and have lost most of my voice to place the order, but I made it on time !!!! It’s amazing how a nice glass of Jack Daniels and coke or a Long Island Ice Tea can motivate oneself! And thus began the party. Tons of food and devils fuel. The gang and I were there at our new found home. (I still love Purple Haze, but I guess I’ve grown older and more mature and cant see myself head banging to death every weekend) I ushered in the New Year with great friends, good music and good food and brew! And all this adventure of sorts….thanks to that girl who got the days of the week mixed up. (High Five!!!!) And that was how 2009, the year that just might turn out to be legen…..wait for it…..dary, was welcomed into our lives.

The next few hours was spent hugging and wishing everyone at TGIF, whether we knew them or not.

On a completely unrelated note….Clark Kent and Lana Lang are back together in season 7 of Smallville !!! And there is Supergirl too…

I'd also like to thank all the great music composers who've written some awesome scores for movies...suited for the occassion.
